About the gift-givers
Santa Claus and his cousins. Most cultures have a December (or January) gift-giver, but the figure varies wildly. Santa is the global brand-leader, but he's actually a cultural mashup: built from Dutch Sinterklaas roots, codified by a single 1823 American poem, then turned into the red-suited corporate-ready figure most of the world recognizes today.
Why this matters. If you grew up with Santa, you might be surprised that hundreds of millions of kids around the world get their gifts from someone entirely different. Italy doesn't use Santa as the gift-giver — they wait for La Befana, the witch, on January 6. Iceland gets 13 mischievous trolls one at a time over 13 nights. Finland has Joulupukki, who actually shows up at your door on Christmas Eve.
Which would you choose? The quiz asks about your timing preferences, your taste in characters, and your sense of how the season should feel. The answer that comes out is the gift-giver from any culture that best matches your instincts.
This quiz is part of HHI's Christmas Around the World feature— an interactive map covering Christmas traditions, foods, decorations, and gift-giving customs from 31 countries. Once you have your result, the country page for that gift-giver's home country goes deeper.
